Annie M. Rowe Rice, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend entered into eternal rest Friday, July 29, 2016. She was born on January 27, 1926 in Crandall, Texas to the parentage of Clive and Christiana Rowe. Graduating from high school in New York, she later obtained her associate degree in nursing from El Centro Community College that included certification as a licensed Registered Nurse. Mother Rice later returned to college and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Dallas Baptist University.
She accepted Christ at an early age and later in life she united with St. Stephen Community Baptist Church where she remained a member for over forty years. During her membership at St. Stephen she served as chairperson and member of the Women’s Missionary Union. Mother Rice also served as a Trustee, Secretary of the Church, chair of the Pastor’s Anniversary Committee, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Nurses Guild, Women’s Chorus, and Mother’s Ministry, and other ministries of the church.
Other activities included; North Texas District Association, Field Area Missions, Christian Women United, and Christian Fellowship Club. Her community service included feeding the homeless at Martin Luther King, Jr. Center and other request for assistance from many agencies.
Her professional career started at Baylor Hospital in the field of nursing that included the honor of being recognized as one of the first African American licensed vocational nurses in Dallas, Texas. She rapidly advanced in her profession that placed her in leadership roles, and she became a mentor to many in the field of health care. After starting her nursing career at Baylor Hospital it expanded to other medical facilities, which included Forest Avenue Hospital as Director of Nursing and Veteran’s Hospital.
Family members that preceded her in death; mother and father, Clive and Christiana; brothers, Clovis, Oliver, William Clive (W.C.), Morgan Austin (M.A), Ulysses, Archie, James, and Tyree Rowe; sister, Cora Haynes. Those left to cherish her memories are; daughters Sharon Phillips-Watson and grandson Chris, Deborah Phillips-Watkins and grandsons Ryan, Kurt, and Tyler (great grandson), Lynn Phillips Nash (Paul) and special granddaughter Keva Munson (Michael) and Aiden and Max (great grandson). Her sisters, left to cherish her memory are Eula Staten and Bessie Peterson as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
