On Thursday, July 6, 1933 a beautiful “Baby” girl was born to Curlie & Early Long in rural Karnack, TX. For “Colored” people during those days, to register a child for a birth certificate the family had to go into “town” only on certain days. As the days added up after her birth, the family called her “Baby” and decided on the name Ruth only once they made it to town because Ruth would answer only to “Baby” so the world was presented with Baby Ruth Long.
Baby Ruth attended primary and secondary schools in Karnack. There she met Richard Lovely (preceded in death) and fell head over hills for “Sweet Man.” They later married and blessed the world with three lovely children, one of whom, Clarence Arthur “Boo” Lovely, preceded her in death.
Baby Ruth was a dedicated employee of Parkland Memorial Hospital for more than 40 years, where she served in the Labor and Delivery Department and witnessed the birth of a number of Dallas children, including some nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A proud member of Deliverance Revival Tabernacle Holiness Church for over 40 years, she was a part of their ministry from the early days in Joppee and on Ewing Ave, under the discipleship of Pastor Milton Jones, to the current location on Bainbridge under his son, Elton’s leadership. She served faithfully as a coordinator of the annual 100 Women in Red service and loved the DRT Choir.
Baby Ruth Lovely leaves to celebrate her legacy, sisters, Willie Burns & Bonnie Milo; daughter, Nelvin Marie (Rie) Lovely-Conner; son, Kennith “Shorty” Lovely; daughter in law, Katrina Lovely; grandsons, Michael Hodge, Terrance Ballard & Bryan Ballard; grand-daughters, Traci Hodge & Ashley Jones; 5 great grand-children, her other children by another mother, Mel, Charlotte, Chris and Mike; cousin/daughter, Connie Jordan; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, M.C. Long, I.V. Long, Lorenzo Long and Huey P. Long; and sisters, Florida Hayes, Viola Henry, Ella Mae Yancy and L. E. Haggerty.
