Bertha Mae Campbell

August 29, 1939 — March 31, 2025

Dallas

Bertha Mae Campbell was born on August 29, 1939, in Marshall, Texas, to Fred and Genevieve Campbell. She was the youngest of five and the only daughter — a precious light among her four older brothers. From the very beginning, Bertha stood out with her radiant spirit, her gentle heart, and a voice that could move the soul.

Her love of music followed her throughout her life. Whether singing the blues or lifting her voice in gospel, Bertha’s songs came from deep within — raw, heartfelt, and full of praise. She gave her life to Christ at a young age and held tightly to her faith throughout the years. A devoted member of True Vine Holy Temple in Dallas, Bertha served faithfully and joyfully, always ready to lend a hand and lift a prayer.

Bertha’s heart for service extended far beyond the walls of the church. She began her career caring for others at Parkland Hospital. Later, she discovered a new path — one that let her combine her love for people with the joy of the open road. Driving buses for DART and Dallas County, Bertha took pride in safely transporting countless children — including her beloved grandchildren — to school, games, and field trips. She retired from Dallas County with a full heart and eventually stepped into her calling as a pastor, continuing to pour love and wisdom into all those around her.

Bertha was preceded in death by her loving parents and all four of her brothers: Jessie, Charles, Earnest, and Moes Campbell. She is also reunited in peace with Elijah Barrett Sr., Dorothy Barrett, and Robert Barrett.

Her legacy lives on through her children: Elijah Barrett Sr., Donald Ray Barrett (Dallas), Spurgeon Wayne Barrett Sr. (Gala Barrett), and R. May Demby (Bob Demby). She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Kanesha Thompson, Damon Thompson, Denecia Barrett, Denielle Barrett, Elijah Barrett III, Angela Torres, Gwen Denby, Travis Denby, Latoya Smith, Iglesias Smith, Spurgeon Barrett Jr., and Nefretiri Barrett — along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Bertha Mae Campbell’s life was a beautiful song — one of faith, strength, love, and laughter. Though she has gone home, her melody remains in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
