Dorothy Mae Harris was born to the parentage of James Thomas and Alice Green on May 11, 1923 in Greenwood, Louisiana. She completed her formal education in Waskom, Texas, where she met and married Eugene Long.
?Granny,? as she was affectionately known to many, was well known and loved in her neighborhood. She had a passion for cooking, loved and cared for children, and ministered to the sick and shut in.
Granny professed Christ at an early age. She was baptized at Union Baptist Church in Waskom, Texas. She later moved to Dallas, Texas where she united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Granny became a charter member of Greater Saint Joseph Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. M. Guthrie where she was an active member for over 60 years. She was Mother of the church for over 50 years, and also served as church secretary for over 50 years. Granny was president of the choir, worked in the mission, and served as the superintendent and teacher of Sunday school. She loved the Lord and was an obedient and faithful servant of the church, and most of all, Jesus Christ.
Granny later married George Harris, who preceded her in death.
Mother Harris leaves to cherish in her memory: a brother, Silas (Bennie) Green, 6 children - Betty Brown, Londell (Geraldine) Long, Claudell Fisher, Joseph (Beverly) Long, Lonnie Long, and Nancy Henry; and a grandchild (Janie Long) whom she adopted; 20 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, 42 great- great-grandchildren, and 27 great-great-great children; and a host of nieces, nephews, many relatives, and life-long friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, two grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
