Esther J. Evans, 85, of Dallas Texas, passed on November 30, 2014. She was born February 25, 1929 in Fulton, Arkansas, daughter of the late Chauncey and David Leigh Johnson. She was the fourth of six siblings. On September 7, 1947, she married Harper T. Evans Sr., who preceded her in death.
In 1972, she graduated from Bishop College with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. In 1963, she opened Evans Piano and Theory where she fostered a passion for musical theory and composition. In addition to teaching music to students, Mrs. Evans’ served as the organist at Ezell Chapel C.M.E. Church and worked in several capacities.
A lifetime member of the Dallas Metropolitan Business and Professional Women’s Club, Mrs. Evans has served as president and chaired several committees. Other affiliations included the South Dallas Concert Choir, MENC, The NAACP, Dallas Chamber of Commerce and DMMA, an affiliate of The National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc.
She is survived by son Harper Evans and daughter-in-law Carolyn, sons Lowell and Brian Evans; granddaughters, Ramona Evans, Karen Evans- Jones, Kimberly Evans- Kirby, Rochelle Evans Wilson; great- grandchildren, Ashley Webb, Joseph Webb II, Kristen Kirby, Lauren Jones, Kaitlyn Jones, Mckenzie Jones, Reaghan Evans, Keelon Kirby II, Trevor Wilson and Trenton Wilson; sister-in law, Tanya Evans.
The wake will be held Sunday, December 7th from 5-7PM at Lincoln Memorial Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 8th at 11:00AM at Ezell Chapel C.M.E. Church, 1442 Overton Rd, Dallas, Texas.
