Mrs. Jere Lee Blanton was blessed with 86 years of life; a life committed to service inspired by her Lord who came not to be served but to serve (Matt 20:28; Jn 13:12-17).
A native of Dallas, Texas, she was born to the parentage of Jeremiah and Osie McKinney. Jere matriculated at Lincoln High School, then Texas College-B.S., and finally Texas Southern University-M.Ed. She was married to The Reverend Richard P. Blanton for 27 years until his death in 1977. This union was blessed with two children, Dietra who lived briefly after birth, and Rev., Dr. Richard L. Blanton, affectionately known as Ricky.
Beyond her nuclear family, Mrs. Blanton deposited herself into countless numbers of children during 37 years as a classroom teacher. Mrs. Blanton began her teaching career in Tyler Texas at the Dixie Colored School. She later transferred and retired from the Dallas Independent School District. Most knew her as the art teacher at N. W. Harlee. But, due to District realignment, she was forced to teach according to her degrees during her last few years. She retired in physical science at the Transportation Magnet School where she was honored as Teacher of the Year and their nominee for National Teacher of the Year.
She gave her heart to the Lord at a young age and united with the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. After her late husband accepted his call to the ministry she served as first lady of the New Samaria Missionary Baptist Church for twenty-five years. Never comfortable on a pedestal, most remember her as the Vacation Bible School art and crafts teacher. She later returned to Bethlehem where she served as the Church Clerk and lent her rich alto voice to the adult choir.
Jere was also immersed in Sisterhood. She committed her life to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and was active in service until her health was compromised. Mrs. Blanton was initiated into the Gamma Epsilon chapter, Texas College in 1946. She joined the Metropolitan Dallas Alumnae chapter in 1985 shortly after the chartering and supported numerous efforts including School America, Delta Dears and Jabberwock. She was honored for 50 years of dedicated service to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1996. And 64 years after becoming a Delta, Jere?s inspiration proved instrumental in spawning another Soror?her granddaughter and namesake in the Spring of 2010 (Oklahoma City Alumnae chapter).
Even more, Jere married her legendary Dallas Cowboys for better or for worse, richer or poorer. She cheered from the comfort of the den couch or the exhilaration of the stadium seat.
Finally, she was the consummate organizer. Jere established her own long-term care and pre-need programs greatly relieving her family of many end-of-life woes.
Mrs. Blanton is survived by her son, daughter-in-law and principal caretaker Sheila, 3 grandchildren (Richard, Rodrick, and Jerelen)?all with college degrees and careers, and 4 great grandchildren (Richard, Rashard, Taiden, and Micah). She was supported by a host of relatives and friends current and deceased.
Well done faithful servant. Welcome to the joy of the Lord!
