Lawrence E. Gardner, Senior was born on April 8, 1927 in Ore City, Texas. The son of Hubert Gardner and Louberta Briscoe, he was the eldest son. In his youth, Lawrence attended grade school in Ore City, Texas. Growing up in a rural area, he spent many days in the country and developed a true appreciation for the outdoors. As a young adult, Lawrence served in the United States Army during WWII until 1947.
In the years following his service, Lawrence focused on creating a life back in Texas. One day while sitting in church, he set his eyes on a young beauty by the name of Audry Mae Owens. The two eventually wed and soon after had their first of three sons, Lawrence, Jr. Don Wayne was born two years later followed by Edward twelve years later.
Lawrence established his career with Temco Aircraft Corporation in the 1950's as a member of Dept. 862, Aircraft Preparation. During this time, Lawrence also attended night classes at Southern Methodist University, studying the art and business of horticulture.
His educational endeavors, entrepreneurial spirit and love of nature paved the way for Gardner's Nursery, a landscaping business. As the founder and owner, Lawrence enjoyed beautifying the lawns of many homes throughout the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, including some belonging to members of the Dallas Cowboys. Lawrence operated a successful business for more than 35 years.
The Gardner family established a home in Hamilton Park Dallas. Lawrence was an active member in the community, serving on the deacon board and financial committee at Good Street Baptist church. As the cornerstone of the family, Lawrence placed God first in everything and instilled those same values in his family. Lawrence truly cherished his loved ones, supporting all of his children and grandchildren in their educational and professional pursuits. His belief in education was made evident as he put all three of his sons through college. Lawrence spread pure joy and laughter anytime he was present and treated every human being with kindness and love.
Left to carry on his legacy are his son, Edward; his daughter-in-law, Sylvia; his grandchildren, Angela, Ashley and Alicia; and his siblings, Bonnie Evans, Jr. (aka “Sprunk”), Bobby Ray Briscoe, Tommy Ray Briscoe and Willie H. Gardner.
Lawrence will be dearly missed and cherished in memory by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
