Lloyd David Brown (David, L.D., West Dallas Kid, or West Dallas Red) was born on December 16, 1946, in Denison, Texas, to Dallas James Brown and Ellen Anderson Brown. He was the ninth child of twelve children, and the sixth son born in this union. David married Lillie Mae Phiefer on July 3, 1966. Unto this union, four children were born: three sons, David Brown “Mark”, James Brown “JB”, and Bryant Brown “B-Scale”, and one daughter, Cathy Brown “Buffy”. Although they separated in 1994 and divorced in 2008, he let it be known that Lillie was still the love of his life.
David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He attended school in both Dallas, Texas and Muskogee, Oklahoma. He played basketball in junior high school and in high school. He graduated from Manual Training High School in Muskogee with the class of 1965. He was a proud Manual Training High School Bulldog, and he majored in auto mechanics under the tutelage of Mr. Leon McCorimick, whom he cherished dearly.
David also started working at an early age, doing various odd jobs as a boy and working at a service station. Following the footsteps of his father, Private Brown, and his older brothers, Louis and Kennard, he enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1967. He was stationed in Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He served in the 133rd infantry for two years, representing NCOCs while transporting missiles from Texas to California. He was the “go guy” in his service. Sergeant Brown’s decorations, medals, badges, commendations, and campaign ribbons included: NDSM, GCMDL, and Expert (Rifle). He was very proud to serve his country. He received an honorable discharge.
After serving in the U. S. Army, David worked as a jet mechanic for Cooper Air Motives/Aviall. He represented the company’s baseball team well, and after serving this company for over 20 years, he assumed ownership of Bo and Bill Auto Repair Shop, which was located on Cedar Crest. He maintained ownership of the Shop for nearly 20 years until he retired. He was the “go to man” when it came to repairing cars, and even after he had retired, he continued to repair people’s cars until his health would no longer allow him to do so. Working on cars was among several of his passions, including fishing, hunting, playing dominoes, and shooting pool. While he did not claim to be the best at these, he would let you know, “I am the best I know; I put spots on the dominoes.” He also enjoyed traveling and playing the lottery and scratch offs. Although he never claimed a favorite color, most people know he loved Dr. Pepper soda and roast with the works.
Brother Brown joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church under Pastor Robert Murphy in 2009. As a disciple of Mt. Pisgah, David served as a member of the brotherhood and male chorus. He remained a faithful disciple and servant of these ministries until his health began to fail.
