Coach Patrick Payne died peacefully in his sleep on June 27, 2015 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 89.
Coach Patrick Payne is survived by his children, Peggy Shelton, Patrick Payne, and Penny Peterson, all of Dallas, Texas. Grandchildren, Shawnn Shelton, Alcindor Payne, Corey Payne, Brandy Peterson all of Dallas, Texas. Great-granddaughter Tyree Shelton of Lancaster, Texas.
Coach Payne was born on August 15, 1925 in Evergreen, Louisiana to Albert and Margaret Payne. He graduated from Texas College with a BA degree. He married Alzena Caldwell in Tyler, Texas in 1947. After moving to Beaumont, Texas Coach Payne began working for Beaumont school district as Hebert High School Football Coach. Over period of time, the couple welcomed 3 children into their home and set about teaching them spiritual principles, and academic excellence.
Coach Patrick Payne Areas of Achievement: Lettered in three major sports: basketball, football, baseball. He was voted Most Outstanding Freshman, All Conference and All American End.
He was a generous, dedicated individual who loved sports and who was passionate about educating students.
He was an active and dedicated member of the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church of Dallas, Texas and often volunteered at Meals on Wheels.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who knew and lovingly called him “Chief.”
