Sammie L. Caldwell was born in Travis County, Texas to Johnie Caldwell and Lennie Lee (Cleveland) Caldwell on August 6, 1919. He was the second oldest of 9 siblings (Willie Odis Caldwell, Lenora Caldwell, John Etta Caldwell, Charles Eddie B. Caldwell, Dempsey Caldwell, Lacy Bady Caldwell and Murray Bell Caldwell).
In 1937, Sammie Caldwell was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he was later honorably discharged. In 1947 Sammie married Ethel Mae Caldwell and to their union were born three children, Sammie Caldwell Jr., Sharon Anne (Caldwell) Jones and Sandra (Caldwell) Johnson.
Sammie Caldwell worked for many years for the City of Dallas (where he retired twice). Then, Sammie worked over 15 years for the Dallas Independent School District, where he retired at age 90.
His wife of 57 years (Ethel Mae Caldwell) preceded him in death as well as his son (Sammie Caldwell Jr.) and his daughter (Sharon Anne Caldwell Jones). Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Bobbie Don Caldwell and Sandra Caldwell Johnson (Edward), Grandchildren: Nicole (Robert) Jones Washington, Leonard (Taiquetta) Johnson, LaTisha Johnson, Toshiro Jones, Jeremiah Johnson and Jasmine Johnson 11 great grand children as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
